For Laurelai

Jesus loves me this I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong;
They are weak but he is strong.

In April of this year, we discovered cancer had wrapped its greedy fingers around Laurelai’s brain stem. The news rocked our family, and for many of us, our faith. How could a good God let this happen to a little girl, barely past her third birthday? Over the months that followed, praying for Laurelai and her parents, we came to realize that while God reveals his heart to us through his Word, his mind and his ways remain a mystery.
We take hope knowing that because Laurelai died years too soon, her parents will get to spend forever with her someday. We are inspired by their hope when it didn’t make sense, and their faith when all seemed lost. We know that the God of peace is sustaining them through the ache of losing their little girl, and will sustain them through the dark days to come.
When I heard that Laurelai was gone, I was shattered. I didn’t even know what to pray. I sat on the kitchen floor and just cried. With a two year old in the house, one cannot exactly be alone in her grief. My son was wandering through the kitchen banging on a cardboard box singing Jesus Loves Me. As I swallowed my tears and sang along, the words of that ancient Sunday school song soaked into my soul: Little ones to him belong. I closed my eyes then and I saw her. I saw Laurelai on Jesus’ lap leaning on him the way she leaned on her mom and dad in those last few months. But she lifted her head from his shoulder, touched his face, then jumped down and ran off to dance in the rainbows.

Yes, Jesus loves Laurelai.

A day at the Beach

I just found these pictures on the camera from Paul's birthday trip--oops. We went to Depoe Bay for the night. It was beautiful and so much fun. Benton did some shopping in the pirate store and we sat outside and watched the whales. We saw quite a few swim by out lookout.

Big Boy Bed

Benton has upgraded to a real bed now. He loves the independence it offers. Today also marks the one week anniversary of freedom from the binky!! We're all very happy about that one. Posted by Picasa

Benton's big day

On the morning of my birthday, Mommy made me waffles and eggs--yum! Then I got a bath, which was good for me, bad for Mommy. (The details aren't exactly appropriate for this blog). Aunt Snook and Emma came over and we went to the park for my 2 year old photo shoot and some play time. Then after a nice long nap, we went to dinner with Soren and Grandpa Graham at Red Robin. Soren and I shared some ice cream. Yum! Posted by Picasa

Open Presents! Open Presents!

Mom and Dad made me wait until just before bed to open my presents. It was a good birthday. I slept soooo good that night! Posted by Picasa

The Infamous Hair Chop

It finally took place Saturday morning, September 30, 2006, for those of you who need to make note of the momentous event. Let's just say he handled the stitches better, but we all survived. We'll see what the next few days hold. His father hasn't seen him yet...

Buddies

Benton loves hanging out with Alicia and Gavin. I think Ben and Gavin get along so well because of the curly hair. Posted by Picasa

Hide and Seek

It was erily quiet in the house this morning, so I went looking for the source of the trouble. He wasn't in his room. He wasn't in my room. He wasn't even playing in the toilet. Not noticing the bulge behind the curtain, I called out tentatively, "Benton? Where are you?"

"Here he is!!" Posted by Picasa

A Nocturnal Observer

Last night, as we were closing up shop after our home group, we discovered an interloper had been watching from the tree outside the living room window. The fearless racoon posed for several photos. I've never seen a real one alive before. I can't decide if they creep me out because I always see them dead, or if they are just a creepy animal. Benton, of course, was delighted. He wanted to "pat it," but mean old mom didn't think that was such a good idea. Posted by Picasa

Big Brother in Training

It's true. My Training has commenced. I have until April to get this figured out. When I see my baby friends Vance and Christian crawling around, I follow them and say "hold it!" I get to hold them sometimes and pat them really nice. I think it will be OK. Posted by Picasa

Just for Fun

We went and got Benton's pictures taken last week just for fun. He was charming as usual, and since the 8x10 was free, we went for the one with the obnoxious background. Posted by Picasa

Our State Fair is a great State Fair...

...it's the best State Fair in the state. (I like to kick of fair season by watching the Rogers and Hamerstein classic before I go. Oddly, the Oregon State Fair has never even come close to being similar to the movie). Oh well. We had a great time this year anyway, and as usual, Benton stole the show. He just loved the animals. Well, some of them. Llamas with fancy haircuts: yes. (Favorite new word: Alpaca). Cows, no. Pigs of all shapes and sizes: yay! Chickens: not a chance. Goats: oh yeah. (Second favorite new word: Pigmy).

Baby Lucy

Benton's friend Lucy is growing up! She's four weeks old already and is starting to track things with her eyes. She holds up her head and even smiled at Aunt Andee when she got to hold her. Posted by Picasa

Back to School

Last Saturday, Turning Point Community Church had it's third annual backpack drive. Our tiny church gave 110 backpacks to needy kids in the Turner area. We set up a "school store" where they could come in and "shop" for their school supplies, and on the way out, we plied them with face paints, candy, snow cones, and cotton candy--all free for the kids. We held our event along with an antique car show (sorry, Dad, I didn't get any pictures) and recieved over $100 in unexpected donations from the people there. The fire department even showed up and gave tours of the truck and handed out shiny red hats. Posted by Picasa

Big Fish

Last Sunday, We went to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. We brought along our friend McKinzie from church and we had a blast. Paul got to go SCUBA diving in "Halibut Flats" and I followed Kinzie and Benton around everywhere else. The first photo here was a very close call with a Great White. Next, Ben and Kenzie watch the Puffins in the aviary. Paul and McKinzie poke at unsuspecting Sea Urchins and Star Fish while Benton refreshes himself with a cat nap.
